A Family Approach To The Law

Chapter 7 and the state of the average person's finances

There are a lot of Illinois residents who are struggling to make it financially. Their debt obligations continue to grow, and few know the best way to address the problem -- such as seeking relief through a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, among other things. Recently, a debt relief company asked 2,000 adults what the current state of their finances are and what they would give up if it meant helping them get out of debt. Here is what they had to say.

According to the survey, more than half of the participants claimed to have credit card balances that they carry month to month. The large majority of participants, 72 percent, in fact, have less than $1,000 in savings to cover an emergency. Nearly half of those surveyed claim that it is the daily expenses that are killing them financially; though, plenty of people do carry student loans, auto loans and medical debt, which does not help their situations.

So, what would study participants give up to lower their debt? Going out to eat was something 22 percent of the participants were willing to forgo. A total of 21 percent claim that they would give up taking vacations until the debt was eliminated. A small few, 13 percent, said they would pass on their right to vote if doing so would help.

Some Illinois residents may be able to adjust their spending habits and see their financial situations improve. Others, though, require some assistance to tackle their debt obligations, and there is nothing wrong with that. For some, Chapter 7 bankruptcy, if approved, could result in the discharging of certain debts and may be the best option. Others may not have to go to that extreme. Legal counsel can look over the state of one's finances and help one make a plan on how to address the debt.
